Then and now: what a difference food can make

The other day, I was doing reorganizing some files on my computer and came across a file titled “College Packing List”. It was from 2013.

I opened the file and was astonished by some of the things on the list. I drew up a quick comparison to a packing list I made for a conference last month:

I share this because I think it’s an incredibly visual example of how much my life has changed for the better in the last four years, all thanks to nutrition and functional medicine.

Four years ago, my staple foods were oyster crackers, pasta, pizza, Oreos, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I couldn’t care less about nutrition, and my energy and skin reflected it. Today, I’m proud to be a Ph.D. student in Nutritional Sciences and a public advocate for real food nutrition.

With the exception of my EpiPen, I no longer need all of the medications that I considered essentials to have on hand. My skin is clear, I no longer get migraines or asthma, and I rarely have seasonal allergies. I use natural cosmetic products that don’t harm my health long-term, and I can use fewer of them because of it. Moreover, I have abundant energy, am more secure in who I am, and finally have a career that I’m truly passionate about.

It’s amazing to think that all of this happened in just four years. I’m incredibly thankful to all those that helped me get to where I am now, and grateful that I now have the chance to help others to rediscover their health as well.
